After having contributed to making the Visconti family, originally from Verbano, great and powerful because of its strategic position, very good for controlling lake traffic, the Rocca (Fortress) di Angera was ceded to the Borromeo family between 1447 and 1450, in the middle of the Repubblica Ambrosiana, for the price of 12,800 imperial lire. The Rocca became the home and symbol of the political order of the Borromo, to which it still belongs. Not a common example of a well preserved medieval fortified structure, the Rocca Borromea di Angera was built on a spur of rock that dominates the southern part of Lago Maggiore. The structure has gathered up local history, “narrated” by the cycle of frescos, from the end of the 13th century, that decorate the “Sala della Giustizia” (“Hall of Justice”), the historical rooms, and the Torre (Tower) Castellana, from the top of which ,one enjoys a rare striking view. Several rooms house the Museo della Bambola e della Moda Infantile (The Doll and Childhood Fashion Museum), one of the most important collections in Europe and to which a section dedicated to 19th century abstract computers, perfectly functioning, has been attached.
