Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo della Ragione (Cannobio)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
Popular with international tourism, Cannobio is the first Piemonte town which northern European tourists encounter when they arrive from San Gottardo and San Bernardo. Being a borderland between Piemonte and the Canton Ticino has influenced the history of Cannobio as can be seen from the 16th and 17th century buildings that line the lake. This town, which links its past to the agricultural world of the Valle Cannobina, offers proof of the Roman and the medieval periods, in a perfect balance between architecture and nature, lake landscape and mountain landscape. Strolling along the narrow ancient stone streets, one encounters the Palazzo della Ragione (Palace of Reason) which dates back to the 13th century. Built between 1291 and 1294, with squared blocks of granite and then renovated in the 17th century, it has barrel arches, plaques, coats-of-arms, and bas-reliefs from the 14th century and two Roman tombs under its covered portico. Right next to the Palazzo is the Torre (Tower) del Comune built in the 12th century and topped with a 19th century dome.
