Built as a cemetery Basilica, modelled on St Peters in Rome, by S. Eusebio himself, it has been altered numerous times over the centuries. Demolished in 1570, it was rebuilt in 1580 by the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi, who made the choir and the two chapels, as well as the classical pronaos, divided into columns and surmounted by an attic with statues of the Saviour and the twelve Apostles. The Latin cross plan was added later, as was the 18th century façade designed by Benedetto Alfieri and Luigi Barberis and the large dome erected to a design by the architect Carlo Laghi between 1857 and 1860. The main nave houses the magnificent silver lamina crucifix created between 999 and 1026 and the largest of the four existing Othonian crucifixes.
