To the left of the Basilica di Sant’Andrea, one catches a glimpse of a portico with ogival arches that belongs to the ancient Ospedale di Sant’Andrea, one of the first Italian hospitals. In fact, it was Cardinal Guala Biccheri who wanted the hospital built right next to the Basilica, a perfect place to welcome pilgrims; in fact, the first function of any hospital is to give hospitality to wayfarers. The hospital was created only in 1246 and offers one of the few examples of Piemonte painting from the 13th century. The lunette above the main entrance, following the usual design of Romanesque paintings, depicts Christ in majesty with a saint to His left and Sant’Andrea introducing Cardinale Guala Biccheri to Christ on His right. On the architraves below, an epigraph recalls the main moments in the life of the Cardinal: his mission to Paris and to England, the doctrine, the construction of the hospital, and the selection of Tommaso Gallo as first abbot. The building is embellished with bas-reliefs by Ercole Villa, in particular, the 26 medallions in marble depicting illustrious doctors.
