The foundation of the Museo Civico d’Antichita Belle Arti e Storia Naturale (Civic Museum of Antiquity, Fine Arts, and Natural history) was approved by the City of Susa on December 10, 1884. As one reads on the founding act and in the regulations put forth by Ugo Rosa, its first conservator, the Museo began as a Collezione di Archeologia e Storia Naturale (Archeological and Natural History Collection) from the area of Susa. For this reason, it houses a zoological collection donated by the Susa chapter of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club). In fact, from the first catalogue, edited in 1886, it turns out that the archeological collection consisted mainly of artifacts found in the area, while the list of Egyptian materials - thanks to at least one traveler from Susa - and later donations of exotic objects are linked to the 18th century taste for “Camere delle Meraviglie” (Wunderkammer) which continued into the 19th century in many small local museums.
