Chiesa di San Sebastiano (Biella)
Category: Abbeys and churches
The construction of the convent complex of San Sebastiano, which began between 1500 and 1540, was not finished until 1887. The three nave floor plan has a barrel vault decorated with perpendicular fascias showing three medallions dedicated to San Sebastiano (Saint Sebastian) and supported by slender columns above the central nave; the lateral naves have classic erudite images: ancient and Roman philosophers, bucolic and mythological scenes, Roman and Greek military leaders, and moral and teaching inscriptions. All of it is contained in medallions, topped by four bays with cross vaults from which just as many chapels open up on the sides. The frescos, inlaid with stylized leaves and human figures, are rather important artistically as they were inspired by the grotesque motifs typical of the Renaissance, which had come back into fashion after the discovery of the Nero’s Domus Aurea at the Imperial Forum in Roma. The only chapel entirely frescoed is in the left nave with the Crucifixion on the walls and the Pieta in the lunette. The choir by Gerolamo de Mellis in engraved wood, dates back to 1545 and is characterized by a very unique decorative motif created by imbedding bronze and 13th century Limoges ceramic plates. Finally, the five panel work by Defendente Ferrari from the 16th century with Mary, Baby Jesus, and the Saints in the center is worthy of note.
