The Giardino Botanico (Botanical Garden), at an elevation of 1,200 meters, is about twelve kilometers from Biella. Part of Italian WWF, it is a protected area dedicated to conservation, environmental education, and research. Spontaneous flora, moss, lichen, and ferns are surrounded by beech trees. The natural lake and the streams have the typical vegetation of a humid area. Unlike the old vegetable and botanical gardens from the past, in Oropa it is possible to cultivate exotic plants. Several rocky areas have been created here, where species grow which are typical of other mountain chains and countries in the world such as the Potentilla nepalensis Hook and the Primula denticulate, originally from the Himalayas, the Paeonia sufruticosa, the Paeonia lactiflora originally from Tibet. But, the Garden’s symbol is the Campanula excise Schleicher, an original and rather rare example from the Western and Central Alps described in 1810 by the Swiss botanist Schleicher.
