Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Audifreddi (Cuneo)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
On a side street that crosses the main Via Roma, is one of the most beautiful buildings in Cuneo, Palazzo Audifreddi, which is today the seat of the Biblioteca Civica (City Library). Soaring and austere, built in dark red brick, it is three stories high with symmetrically placed windows protected by a heavy gratings. The building’s interior is softened by a little garden with a central fountain. Although the theory has been put forward that it was originally a religious structure belonging to the Franciscans, the reality is that it was built at the end of the 1600’s by Count Alessandro Mellano of Fiano and of Monasterolo. In 1771, it was acquired by the Audifreddi family who recently donated it to the town.
