Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Municipale (Bra)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
Bra, the “capital of Roero” from the 1700’s on, was a city full of lively activity from a cultural point of view. It is one of the locations of the Piemonte Baroque and certainly the old market square offers a noteworthy show, lined as it is with imposing structures, and not just the Palazzo Comunale, but also Palazzo Mathis, Palazzo Valfre, and Palazzo Garrone. Redesigned and reconstructed during the 18th century by the architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone, the Palazzo Comunale has medieval originals and the façade along Via Monte di Pieta testifies to this. The main façade faces the square and has the typical roundish shape that reminds one of Palazzo Carignano in Torino. The palazzo entrance, through a great atrium, leads to the Sala Consiliare (Council Room), where there are busts of famous citizens from Bra, and to the Sala della Resistenza (Room of the Resistance), where mementoes of the partisan struggle are kept.
