Cattedrale di San Donato (Mondovì)
Category: Abbeys and churches
The cathedral of Mondovi was built between 1743 and 1753 and was the last work by the architect Francesco Gallo who died before the work was completed. It rises on the ruins of an ancient Romanesque church dedicated to San Francesco and is a classic example of Baroque architecture. The monumental façade is in sandstone with a high entrance decorated with statues. The interior has three naves with a large chapel dedicated to the very Holy Saint under which the crypt for the burial of bishops is located. The church’s interior has been enriched with many works of art, painted frescos and sculptures.
