Villar S. Costanzo: the "ciciu" of Villar
approximately 1 and a 1/2 hours
The "ciciu" are formed from the slabs of gneiss which are found where the terrain has been eroded by water. Some areas are protected by these slabs of stone and therefore do not experience erosion. MapOver several centuries the slabs become higher than the surrounding terrain and take on the form of mushrooms. In the Villar S. Costanzo area it is possible to see the degree of evolution by the different height of the "mushrooms". Leave the car at Villar S. Costanzo and continue on foot. After passing the parish church and the first houses of the town, turn right and follow the signs to "fenomeni erosivi". You will come to a track that cuts through a field. Next to a house that serves refreshments, is a clearing (where it is possible to park thecar). Go to the left, passing a gate on your left. The first "ciciu" is situated along this path through the meadows. Carry on and walk through the different-sized mushrooms that are dotted along the slope. The spot also has excellent views of the plain towards Cuneo.
