At the table - Piemonte Feel

Wine

Piemonte is known throughout the world for its wines, a millennia-old tradition that dates back to Roman times. Great Piemonte wines, from sumptuous and sought-after reds (Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Barbera…) to full-bodied and aromatic whites (Erbaluce, Roero, Arneis, Gavi, Cortese…), all the way to friendly and inviting dessert wines to sip over conversation (Asti Spumante, Bracchetto, Moscato d’Asti, Malvasia, Caluso Passito…), are the perfect accompaniment to the many specialties from the Piemonte kitchen.

Production is characterized by large geographic zones that oftentimes straddle each other and intersect: the Langhe (where Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo are produced), Roero (with Roero and Arneis), the Asti area with its centers in Canelli and Nizza Monferrato (where Barbera d’Asti, Moscato d’Asti, Grignolino, Moscato, Ruche, and Freisa are the stars), the Basso Monferrato with its center in Casale Monferrato (where we can taste Barbera, Bonarda, Grignolino, Freisa, Gabiano, and Malvasia), the Alto Monferrato in the Alessandria and Torino areas (where Brachetto, Gavi, and Cortese are local), the area close to the Alps between Vercelli and the hills of Novara (with Bonarda, Gattinara, Sizzano, Fara, Ghemme, Boca, Lessona), Canavese (from where Erbaluce and Calusa arise), and the Carema area, at the entrance to the Valle d’Aosta with the same-named Carema. Piemonte’s patrimony, which can count on 45 DOC and 12 DOCG wines (which altogether cover more than 80% of the region’s vine and wine production), also boasts numerous other very high quality products - not well known - as well as niche productions that are vanishing, but are worth getting to know.

Palazzo Callori a Vignale Monferrato

The building, erected during the 15th century, houses Monferrato’s Regional Wine Cellar (Enoteca). The ancient cellars in tuff are still used to store prized wines and grappas.

Castello di Mazzè

In the ancient underground parts of the medieval castle is the Museo della Tortura (Museum of Torture): tools and methods from the Holy Inquisition. The building is surrounded by a large park with a scenic view looking out over the Canavese.

Manhattan Transfer

"Torino has a unique allure: aristocratic, elegant. We enjoyed the museums, the parks and the people are warm and passionate. And also the cafés and fantastic restaurants where you eat in the Piemonte style: truffles, Barolo, Arneis were, for us, an absolutely unforgettable delicacy."

Patty Smith

"Torino is a distinct city, with a lot of character. It’s not like Firenze or other Italian cities that overwhelm you, where you’re overcome by tourists. It is a city that has a very precise personality, a style, a soul."

Alessandro Baricco

"Torino is a place where, in general, things are done with great seriousness and exactness. Even living and dying."
