  • Where to practice sports

Few Italian regions can boast such abundance of water like that found in Piemonte. Small alpine torrents and powerful rivers, small mountain lakes and large stretches of water, moats and springs make up a natural web of extended courses of water. Numerous artificial basins and canals built for hydro-electric and agricultural purposes add to the list. It sometimes happens that waters pass one on top of the other or canals flow into each other, combining the species of fish, like in the area of Novara at Pontisella, where fishing is particular abundant. Obviously, this enormous network of water makes it easy to hook many species found in Italy and find areas where to fish with every technique possible.
The most widespread species of fish found in the courses of water, artificial lakes and pools in Piemonte are: chub, carp, pike, perch and trout (in its many variations: salmo trutta fario, salmo trutta gairdnerii, lake trout and salmo trutta marmoratus). However, before leaving for a day of fishing, it is advisable to find out who manages the chosen area because there are so many that require an additional permit besides the standard fishing license. As is often the case in Piemonte, these areas are managed by a local or national association, or if the course of water demands civil practices, one must go to the town hall in question to receive permission. In recent years there has been an increase in reserves and protected areas where only “no-kill” and “catch and release” fishing takes place. These are alternatives that are often adopted in order to safeguard a species at risk of depopulation, as in the Sorba torrent, in order to defend the last natural habitat left in Italy of the blue-finned grayling.

Places

Castello di Mazzč

In the ancient underground parts of the medieval castle is the Museo della Tortura (Museum of Torture): tools and methods from the Holy Inquisition. The building is surrounded by a large park with a scenic view looking out over the Canavese.

La “Bollente” di Acqui Terme

This is an elegant, octagonal temple-structure inaugurated in 1879. This eclectic structure has a spring where sulfuric-salty-bromine-iodic water flows at a temperature of 74.5 degrees Celsius.

Historical Wine Cellars in Canelli

The wine cellars – which hold ancient barrels perfectly lined-up – have brick arches, lowered large round arches connected to each other by tunnels that reach into the layers and strata of earth which have formed over the centuries.

"I could live in Torino if they offered me an office on the top floor of the Mole Antonelliana, a location perfect for a director."

Carla Bruni

"I like Torino. It’s alive, beautiful, not at all austere. Plus, it’s creative. Art moves me, even if I am an amateur. I know music well; I breathed it in at home with mom who dedicated herself to classical concerts and my father who composed dodecaphonic pieces."

Mario Brunello

“Torino has a special karma when it comes to music. The audience here in Torino takes a little more time to decide compared to others. It seems like they are waiting, as if they don’t want to invade the field. This is because they treat artists like people, not like celebrities. They make you feel important because of what you have to say with finesse. This is a very courteous way to make you feel at home.”
